How We Actually Program: PT, Semi Private, and Group, and Why They Are Built Completely Differently
Most members show up, find a good session waiting, and trust it. But almost nobody ever sees the thinking that goes in behind it. Why is today lighter? Why are we deadlifting again? Why does the class flow the way it does? Why does your personal training plan look nothing like what your mate does in the group class?
This is the curtain-pulled-back version. Not the brochure description of our services, the actual programming craft underneath them. Because here is what surprises people: the three services are not just the same training in different sized rooms. They are programmed on completely different principles. The goal is identical. The method is genuinely different.
The shared destination
People assume personal training and group class are chasing different outcomes. They are not. The destination is exactly the same, whichever door you come through, and it has three pillars.
First, strength you can actually use. Not gym-only party tricks, strength that transfers to real life: picking up your kids, carrying the shopping in one trip, getting off the floor at seventy without thinking about it.
Second, a conditioning engine that works across the whole range. The ability to go short and hard, and the ability to go long and steady without falling apart. Different systems in your body, and we want all of them working.
Third, enough mobility and range of motion that daily life is not limited by your body, and your injury risk drops because you can access full positions.
Strength, conditioning, mobility. Every member is walking toward that same place. So "which one gets better results" is slightly the wrong question. The real question is how we get you there, and that is where the three split apart completely, because the unit we program is different.
Group: we program the week
Group is where we program the whole week as one connected machine.
We are not thinking about one session in isolation. We are architecting a full week that balances out, roughly a five, three, one shape. Around five days of conditioning across the week hitting different energy systems, some short high-power work, some longer threshold efforts of twenty, thirty, forty minutes. Then strength three, sometimes four days a week depending on which cycle we are in. And at least one longer, slower piece, the engine-builder.
No single day makes sense on its own. Today is lighter because yesterday was brutal and tomorrow will be too. The easy day is not us being soft, it is us protecting the hard days so they can actually be hard. Zoom out to the week and every session has a job, and they are all talking to each other.
Here is the part almost no member ever sees, and it is the fun part. When you program for a room of up to ten, physiology is only half the puzzle. The other half is pure logistics, and it genuinely shapes which movements you get. Picture the room: the rig is on one wall, and the wall ball targets are on the same rig. Program pull ups and wall balls together and you have ten people fighting over the same three feet of wall. So instead we might flow the workout across the room, so bodies move through space without colliding. Or take equipment: put a bike and a rower for ten people in a tight footprint and those machines eat the floor, which can mean no heavy barbells in that same piece because there is nowhere safe to put them. The movement got chosen partly because it is the right stimulus, and partly so a full room can physically do it at once.
That is the craft of group: a week-long plan, balanced across energy systems and strength, delivered through sessions engineered so a full room flows.
PT and semi private: we program the session
Personal training and semi private are a completely different mindset, because here we are usually not programming your whole week. We are programming your sessions.
Why does that matter? A lot of people in these services are not in the gym every day. They come in a couple of times a week for focused, resistance-led sessions, and live their lives around it. So we cannot think like the group coach filling a seven-day engine. We think: you are giving us two, maybe three sessions a week, so every one has to earn its place and be the highest-leverage thing we could possibly do with that hour.
The questions are different too. The first one, which people forget to even ask, is how much time have you actually got? An hour is a totally different plan from thirty minutes. Then: what are we chasing, and where are you starting from? Getting strong, working around a dodgy shoulder, being robust enough that your day job stops wrecking you, each shapes every exercise choice. And because it is just you, or just the four of you in semi private, we build entirely around that.
Here is the philosophy underneath resistance-focused programming. When you train only a couple of times a week, the whole point is knock-on effect. We are not trying to fill your life with gym. We are trying to make the rest of your life better with a small, potent dose of the right training. Get properly strong twice a week and watch what happens: the stairs stop being a thing, you carry all the shopping in one trip, you have energy left at the end of the day, your back stops nagging. The session is the input. Your whole life is where the results show up.
And semi private is the one most members do not realise the difficulty of. Up to four people, one coach, and every single person on their own individual plan. Four different people, four goals, four programmes, running at once in the same space. So we solve the personal-training puzzle four times over, then choreograph it so four separate plans, one coach, and one floor all function together without anyone waiting or crashing into each other. From the outside it looks like four people training. Underneath, it is four bespoke sessions in a dance.
The thing underneath all of it
Group programs the week. PT and semi private program the session. But one thing sits underneath all three and decides whether any of it works, and it is not the cleverness of the programme. It is whether you actually do it.
The best-designed programme on earth is worth nothing if you do not show up. Compliance is the whole game, and the biggest thing we are ever really solving for is how to get you to want to come back tomorrow. This quietly shapes everything. Group is programmed the way it is, the intensity, the variety, the community, partly because it makes you want to return, and that is by design. In personal training, if you love the rower and hate running, we might lean into the rower early, because a plan you enjoy is a plan you keep. In semi private it is the individual plan plus the small-group energy pulling you back.
So yes, we care enormously about the science. But it all sits on one unglamorous foundation: get you to keep coming back. Consistency beats perfection every single time.
So which door is yours?
If you want your whole week handled, high intensity, big community, and you are happy taking on a brilliant general plan alongside a room full of people, that is group.
If you want training built entirely around you, your goal, your body, your schedule, with the highest accountability there is and a couple of potent sessions that make the rest of your life better, that is personal training.
If you want that same individual programming with a bit of company and a friendlier price, that is semi private.
And these are not walls. Members move between them as their goals change, and now that you understand how each one is actually built, you can make that choice properly.
The next time you look at the board, or your own plan, and something seems odd, the light day, the repeated lift, the movement that seems random, it is not random. There is a week, or a session, being architected around you.
